So, today I decided to try my hand at Entomophagy, a subject that struck my interest a few weeks ago. I've done quite a bit of research on the benefits of entomophagy. I haven't been able to find any downsides whatsoever, except of course for the negative social stigma attached to it in western culture.

Anyway, today I purchased both mealworms and waxworms.

Mealworms are the larvae the Tenebrio molitor (darlking beetle or mealworm beetle). Waxworms are the larvae of the Pyralidae (wax moths).




Here is a picture of both the mealworms (left) and waxworms (right) after being cleaned. It's best to cook them while they are still alive.


Here we can see them sautéing with butter and garlic. Smells good ;]


Here is the final product. I didn't make that many as I did not have that many to begin with and this was more or less me testing the waters so to speak. Since I enjoyed the taste I can justify raising more of these for consumption.

Overall I preferred the waxworms as they had more flavor than the mealworms. Both of them tasted pleasant and had a mild flavor that I can't compare to anything else I've ever eaten.

is there any particular upside to eating bugs/worms/insects WHATEVER or are you just doing it for the hell of it. The idea of you raising them is humorous to me though...you'll be the crazy guy down the street who raises and eats worms. i'm not hating or anything...i've eaten my fair share of entomophagy shit

I think you need to recheck the definition of meat. The scientific community recognizes insects as 'meat'.

There's loads of benefits.
Compared to cattle, poultry, etc insects have far less environmental impact.

Raising insects requires MUCH LESS:
Space/Land
Food
Water
Labor

Here's a good example.

For every 9 units of weight in feed you give cattle you get approximately 1 unit of weight returned in meat.

For every 9 units of weight in feed you give insects you get approximately 8 units of weight returned in meat.

Insects are high in protein, low in fat, high in nutrients, etc.

Different insects have different nutritional values, tastes, and so on.

I also think the idea of raising insects is humorous. But it'd be interest. Some people would have home gardens. I'd have a giant bug farm in my back yard... I could cook some bugs up and creep out my guests... it'd be so COOL!!

The idea of eating insects is only taboo in certain places. Even Native Americans used to practice entomophagy.

This is also a good way to feed those poor, starving ni- unfortunate people in other countries.

Insects seem to be everywhere, so this could be a good way to solve hunger issues, and grow your own food, too.

I just would never actually go through with raising my own, maybe if I see a tasty little fucker, I'd eat it. It's cool you're actually going to do it, you'll probably be a neighborhood legend, maybe even a story book character someday.
