Breaking things down into lots of long and short-term calibrated aims; 3. Reward even smallest efforts and don't punish failures; 4. Feedback. To learn effectively people must see links between actions and consequences. This idea can be applied at all levels, think of global environment problems. 5. Uncertainty in getting rewards. You can get different rewards with different probability rates. 6. Collaboration and competition. An example is dragon kill points in Everquest. 7. True. The point of #1 is that it would be nice if there was some measure of progress. That does not mean it has to be the traditional exp bar, but something that encourages players to push on.
