I have been trying to find an old game I played years and years ago, I'm almost positive it was an NES game but it may have been SNES. Basically, you would run around on foot in these top down zelda esque maps, but the game had a future world sort of setting. When it came time to move back and forth between maps, your character would use a device mounted on his back to transform into a jet and play through a short top down scrolling shooter level ala games like 1942.

Has anyone here played this game and could help me recall more about it, most importantly, the title of it?

A friend helped me find it, the game is called The Guardian Legend, and if you have a working NES emulator you should download and play it. It's the best NES game you've never played.

Oh, if you want another pimpass NES game you've never heard of, play Chaos World. You'll need to find a translated rom since its jap only, but its a super solid RPG so ahead of its time it makes some of today's games look bad in comparison.

All of today's games are bad. RPG are all flashy and some game mechanics. They forget what RP means. They forget story.

This game has game mechanics out the wazoo

-A choice of any of the games classes with customizable stat distribution for you main character.

-A fully functional day and night system with corresponding event changes and shop openings/closings.

-An awesome fully automated combat system with a series of tactics settings where a highly intelligent AI picks actions in a way highly similar to the gambits of FF12.

This is all from a game thats well over 20 years old.

What are you doing posting links to roms bro? That's illegal and against the forum TOS.

Thanks for that recommendation of Chaos World. I'm playing it now, it's pretty cool. It takes a little getting used to at first but after that its pretty damn good. I miss the 8 bit days.

You gotta be quick to read the damage though, its a little hard to get it all sometimes.

That fast pacing could be said to be a perk of the game.

Oh man, I LOVE this game. I was able to guess it halfway through reading your first post.

I played it a ton as a kid, but only ever beat it once. Those crazy eye bosses... well, there's tons of them, but mainly the 'grimgrin' or whatever ones in the organic area are hard as HELL, but then the LAST BOSS was nearly impossible. Incredible game, though--it's like Metroid meets Zelda meets really good vertical shmups.

Thought that was called "StarTropics".

Does the kid have a yo-yo for a weapon? I might've played it a long time ago.

All I remember is a blue level with giant black wrecking balls rolling around, or I might just be imagining things...

I dunno, really.

Star tropics is great, but totally doesn't feature any shooter sequences. Another NES game everyone should go play if they havent though.
